This is a great opportunity to learn more about the techniques used to make these delicious products, and you can even taste them directly at the producer's premises. A hike through the Samaria Gorge is a must for experienced walkers! As you explore its 18 kilometres of remarkable landscapes dotted with 450 species of plants, you'll cross wooden bridges and narrow passages that can reach an impressive height of 700 metres. For those with a passion for antiquity, a visit to Knossos, the famous palace of King Minos, will give you an insight into Minoan civilisation. The ruins of the former 5-storey palace have been partially reconstructed, and the accompanying museum provides an overview of all the archaeological discoveries relating to this culture, from the Neolithic period to the fall of the Minoan empire. Must do Stroll through the narrow streets of the historic port town of Rethymno and stop off at one of its little shops to buy a souvenir of your trip. For lunch, sit down in one of the restaurants lining the harbour to sample freshly caught fish while enjoying a magnificent view of the Venetian-era fortress. Chania is another of Crete's must-visit towns. Situated further west, the island's second-largest city harbours a unique charm. Don't miss out on its pretty Venetian harbour, complete with a lighthouse and lined with restaurants, shops and bars. Hotels are mostly concentrated in the north of the island, but the south coast, which is less well known to travellers, is worth a visit. It is more authentic and unspoilt, and boasts some exceptional natural spots, including the very pretty beach of Elafonissi with its pink sand.
