Must do The Saat Kulesi clock tower, erected in 1901 on Konak beach, is Izmir’s most iconic landmark. The 25 metre high tower was designed in the typical Ottoman architectural style and was a gift from Wilhelm II to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sultan's throne. Just a few hundred metres away, you’ll find Konak Pier. This historic customs building designed by Gustave Eiffel now houses an exclusive shopping centre, a cinema and several restaurants. For a breathtaking view of Izmir’s bay and port, take the Asansör, a gigantic lift donated to the city by a merchant in 1907. In the past, it spared residents of the city's highest districts from the arduous 115-step climb to get home. You can also visit the fortress of Kalifekale, which also boasts breathtaking views.
